Raising Awareness of Suicide in Dungannon and Armagh (Article taken from Tyrone Courier 14/03/07)

The Niamh Louise Foundation has received funding from the Southern Investing for health partnership to help raise awareness of suicide and promote positive mental health in both Dungannon and Armagh.
The foundation is training community and church leaders to raise awareness of the issues that can lead to suicide and how to reduce the stigma that can surround it. A catalogue of local support information will also be developed for those seeking advice on suicide or mental health.
James Mc Bennett, Chair of the Niamh Louise Foundation told the Courier “As a member of a family bereaved through suicide, we have found that people tend to seek support from their local community. Recent consultation events in the area identified communities and churches as having a potentially pivotal role in helping those bereaved and those at risk of suicide. Furthermore, all community groups in the area recognised a need for more suicide awareness training. Armagh and Dungannon has very strong community networks and we look forward to working with these to tackle the issue of suicide and promoting positive mental health.”
The Southern Investing for Health Partnership is leading the development of a Southern Area Action Plan to implement the Northern Ireland Suicide Prevention Strategy – Protect Life.
Partnership Manager, Lyn Donnelly said, “The Protect Life strategy aims to reduce the number of suicides and address the rising rates of self harm. To Address this problem in the southern area, it has been imperative for us to engage with local communities and families bereaved by suicide. The Naimh Louise Foundation is one of a number of community organisations that we have funded to help tackle the issue. Organisations like this are vital in promoting positive mental wellbeing at a very local level.”
Members of the Niamh Louise Foundation wanted to thank the Southern Investing for Help team for their on going support in this particular project and the organisers of the fundraising event, “A special word of thanks Gareth, Carla and Terry from the “Morph drop in centre” for the use of their premises and to Damien and his colleagues for the event, a spokesperson said.”
